We are very much defined by what we do. Some think that our temperament doesn't shape our behaviour as much as our behaviour shapes our temperament.
Have you ever noticed that the first most common question normally asked at a party to a stranger is ‘So….. what do you do for work?’ That’s because we are quick to make a judgment and are keen to assess how we fit into a larger system.
There is a strong correlation between how we see ourselves as a result of the position we hold and our status as it is perceived by others.
I’m a teacher, I’m an architect, I’m a doctor. They all carry certain level of preconception and expectation of a predetermined mannerism, behaviour, level of humour or intellect.
We are too much of one thing and not enough of the other.
But we can’t be put in the same box, even when we do the same job as others. Research shows that 40% of what we do every day is done out of habit and we all have different routines.
It is how we do the things we do that defines us, our morals, believe systems, dreams and fears, chances we take and opportunities we ignore.
We are what we do. We are not our jobs.
